When I say that “I see” the film, I mean thereby a unique mixture of two contrary currents: the film is what I receive, and it is also what I release, since it does not preexist my entering the auditorium and I only need close my eyes to suppress it. Releasing it, I am the projector, receiving it, I am the screen; in both these figures together, I am the camera, which points and yet records.

Still working through various theories. I have come to the conclusion that… I’m still confused.

The Imaginary Signifier actually has some very interesting ties to film preservation debates, located around statements such as this. Sure wish I had thought of responding to it for Rob’s Historio paper.
